2004 Homestead Block Pinot Noir
WINEMAKER'S NOTES
Floral components of rose, hibiscus and violet rise from the glass to mingle with impressions of black cherry, cedar, barrel toast and mint. The Pommard grapes in the Homestead Block have always provided a weighty mouth feel, and the 2004 is the same case. Dark cherry, cedar, sweet oak and baking spice compliment a classic Pinot Noir meatiness. Still tightly wound, the wine begs the patience of the wine drinker in order to realize its depth. Fine-grained tannins accompany a persistent finish.
THE VINEYARDS
Homestead Block is a small plot on which sat the homestead of the family that first settled the land. The gentle slope, planted to Pommard grape vines in 1982, is a reliable source of grapes of exceptionally pure dark fruit character.

WINEMAKING
Grapes are hand harvested in the early-morning cool, screened for quality, and delivered to the winery where they undergo destemming and cold-maceration prior to fermentation. The gentle process facilitates maximum color extraction and soft tannins. Following fermentation, the wine was aged 10 months in 50% new oak barrels and 50% once-filled barrels. We selected new fine-grained oak barrels from the Vosge forest and coopered by Mercurey in order to enhance in a subtle way the fruit character of this particular wine. The wine was then blended and returned to barrels for an additional five months of aging during which time the wine flavors continue to meld and integrate with the tannins.

For several years, we’ve been beguiled by the powerful fruit coming off this small vineyard which, as its name suggests, was the site of the homestead on the property. The plot was planted in 1982 to vines of the Burgundian Pommard clone which have responded to conditions on the south-facing elevated benchland site with remarkably concentrated flavors of dark cherry. Six Dijon-clone Pinot Noir grape varieties grow on the Van Duzer estate in Willamette Valley. As a rule, the Dijon clones, being early to ripen, are likely to grow to full flavor development. With their individual flavor characters, a blend of Dijon clones offers a rich medley of sweet fruit flavors of blackberry, cherry, and cassis notes layered with hints of chocolate, exotic spices, and smoke.
